About the Library—ServicesDVD and VHS
Circulation Services Stanley Library offers circulation services for most of its collection of over 115,000 books. Students, faculty, staff, and their families may check out any book with the exception of reference materials or those in special collections. Residents of Franklin County may also check out books. They should present a Franklin County Public Library card at the circulation desk.
Reference Services Patrons have access to a wide variety of online databases and indexes as well as traditional reference books. A professional librarian is on reference duty for nearly all operating hours to help formulate research questions and strategies. She or he can also suggest appropriate sources and provide instruction in using them. Students and faculty are encouraged to walk in and consult the reference librarian at any time. In the busy times of the semester it is sometimes less frustrating to make an appointment for a reference interview. Patrons may do this by contacting George Loveland, Head of Library Public Services, by phone (4427) or email gloveland@ferrum.edu.
Computer Lab The Computer Lab, located on the library's lower level, provides members of the Ferrum College community with access to network connected computers and printers during regular library hours. In order for the Stanley Library to continue providing quality patron service, lab users are asked to abide by Ferrum College's Appropriate Use guidelines and to not abuse his or her printing, scanning, or cd writing priviledges.
Bibliographic Instruction In addition to ongoing individual instruction, Stanley Library offers a coordinated series of research and reference presentations. Through the Freshman Seminar program, students are introduced to the librarys resources and instructed in basic searching skills during their first semester at Ferrum. In their second semester, students research and write a paper under the guidance of their English 102 professor, with the assistance of librarians. As students take more advanced classes, professors schedule library instruction sessions that are tailored to specific subject areas and research assignments. Faculty wishing to schedule a bibliographic instruction session should contact George Loveland, Head of Library Public Services, by phone (4427) or email gloveland@ferrum.edu.
Interlibrary Loan If a student or faculty member needs books or articles that are not housed in Stanley Library, it is often possible to borrow the item(s) from other libraries. Although there is sometimes a small processing fee charged by the lending library, this service is usually free. To order books through Interlibrary Loan ask a librarian for assistance. Any questions concerning I.L.L. policies should be directed to Cheryl Hundley at extention 4420.
Printing & Copying Photocopies are 5¢ each, unless given authorized access to a copy code. Printing from our computers, however, is free as long as it is not in excess and the materials are of an academic nature. Most often articles found in our periodicals & journals are available on the web. Ask a librarian to help you locate it and save your change for the laundry.
Microform Services You're looking at our newest Microform reader which is much more user-friendly for accessing some of the top newspapers, journals and periodicals of the nineteenth & twentieth century. Photocopies are free and a librarian or assistant is on staff at all times to demonstrate proper usage.
Reserves In past years, Ferrum College faculty have placed course materials on reserve for students to access at the Stanley Library Circulation desk. Although books and videos will still remain behind the counter, this year the library will enter other items such as lecture notes, articles, and practice tests into its Electronic Reserve System. E-RES will not only allow students to access on-line materials from the comfort of their own room, but it will also save them time, money, and frustration at the photo-copy machines. Since E-RES enables all students to simultaneously view a document on-line, it also eliminates last minute congestion at the Circulation Desk and the unfortunate loss or damage of irreplaceable course materials. As you begin accessing E-reserve send any questions, comments, or suggestions to Cy Dillon or pay me a visit in the Stanley Library.
Art Gallery An extention of the Art Department, The Stanley Library Art Gallery periodically showcases faculty, student, and community art work throughout the Ferrum College school year. To view the latest exhibit, access the gallery from the main entrance of the Library: top the stairs, turn the turn-style, and make a left around the corner.
