A–Z ListAccess Science is the online version of the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology with image archives and a science news feature. It is a good place to begin research on scientific topics. ACS Journals offers searchable full text of 36 journals published by the America Chemical Society. The Action Bioscience web site provides articles by scientists, science educators, and science students on issues related to seven bioscience challenges: environment, biodiversity, genomics, biotechnology, evolution, new frontiers in science, and bioscience education. Advances in Social Work (Requires registration) AgBioForum is a searchable, web-based journal with articles focused on biotechnology and economics in agriculture. American Civil War Letters and Diaries contains 2,009 authors and approximately 100,000 pages of diaries, letters and memoirs. The collection also includes biographies, an extensive bibliography of the sources in the database, and material licensed from The Civil War Day-by-Day by E.B. Long. American Journal of Botany: This is a scholarly journal published by the Botanical Society of America. American Journal of Psychology: The complete text of this journal since 2003. American Journal of Sports Medicine: Searchable full text back to 1999. Annual Reviews: Authoritative, analytic reviews of the year’s work in 32 focused disciplines within the Biomedical, Physical, and Social Sciences. Annual Reviews publications are among the most highly cited in scientific literature. This is an excellent resource for starting research on a topic. The ARTstor Digital Library Charter Collection is a repository of hundreds of thousands of digital images and related data, the tools to actively use those images, and a restricted usage environment that seeks to balance the rights of content providers with the needs and interests of content users. It contains downloadable images of many well known works of art. Bartleby.com features a large collection of out-of-copyright books along with current reference works. BioOne brings to the Web a uniquely valuable aggregation of the searchable full-texts of high-impact bioscience research journals. Most of BioOne's titles are published by small societies and non-commercial publishers, and, until now, have been available only in printed form. Britannica is the online version of the encyclopedia plus the Merriam-Webster Dictionary and Thesaurus. Criminal Justice Periodical Index contains dozens of searchable full-text journals related to crime, law, and justice. This is a key resource for criminal justice majors. Digest of Educational Statistics is the United States Department of Education’s collection of reports and statistics for a ten-year period (1995-2005). Directory of Open Access Journals offers free, full-text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals in all subjects. There are now more than 2550 journals in the directory. Early Encounters in North America contains 1,482 authors and over 100,000 pages of letters, diaries, memoirs and accounts of early encounters with the peoples and places of the New World from 1601 to after 1850. Ecology is comprised of searchable full-text versions of four journals from the Ecological Society of America. It is good place to start research in environmental science. ECONLIT, published by the American Economic Association, provides indexing of a wide range of economics-related literature in addition to an expanded version of the Journal of Economic Literature (JEL) indexes of journals, books, and dissertations, EconLit covers both economic theory and application. Over 80% of all current records include abstracts. Also included are full texts of book reviews published in the Journal of Economic Literature. The Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology is a searchable full text version of the 24 volume Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology. The Encyclopedia of Life Sciences features more than 3,900 specially commissioned and peer-reviewed articles written by leaders in the field. Articles are divided into three different categories indicating their level of complexity: Introductory, Advanced and Keynote. Introductory articles have been written primarily for undergraduate and non-specialists requiring the basic concepts of a particular subject. Advanced articles provide a more detailed discussion of specialist subjects, equivalent to that found in graduate level texts. Keynote articles provide a platform for debate where controversial issues and 'hot topics' can be discussed. ERIC is the standard research database for all education topics. Searches can be limited to full-text results. European Journal of Philosophy is the searchable full text archive of this scholarly journal. Evans Early American Imprints is a huge database of full-text versions of books and other publications printed in America before 1800. FACTIVA is an excellent source for comprehensive business information. FACTIVA also has the full text of thousands of newspapers, magazines, and journals. Government Information is Bernan’s index of 5,000 federal and state government sites. Greenwood Press Books provides links to hundreds of electronic books on academic subjects. This collection is very easy to use compared to most other e-book formats. Grove’s Dictionary of Art is the definitive reference work on world art and artists. Grove Art Online comprises the full text of The Dictionary of Art, edited by Jane Turner (1996, 34 vols) and The Oxford Companion to Western Art, edited by Hugh Brigstocke (2001). Grove’s Dictionary of Music is the best available reference source on all types of music. Grove Music Online comprises the full text of The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, second edition, edited by Stanley Sadie and John Tyrrell (London, 2001), The New Grove Dictionary of Opera, edited by Stanley Sadie (London, 1992), and The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz, second edition, edited by Barry Kernfeld (London, 2002). Harpweek contains the searchable full text of the magazine Harper’s Weekly from 1857 to 1877. It is an excellent resource for the era around and including the War Between the States. It is full-text and supports a variety of search formats. Hospitality & Tourism Complete Humanities International Complete Index to Letters, Diaries, Oral Histories, and Personal Narratives lets you keyword search more than 700,000 pages of full-text by more than 18,000 individuals from all walks of life. It also contains pointers to some 4,300 audio and video files and 30,000 bibliographic records. Literature Resource Center has up-to-date biographical information, overviews, full-text literary criticism and reviews on nearly 130,000 writers in all disciplines, from all time periods and from around the world, supplemented by the scholarly materials of the Scribner Writers Series and Twayne's World, U.S., and English Authors Series. Medline is the National Library of Medicine’s index (with many full text articles) of articles from medical journals and important research studies. It is the best place to research medical topics. Military & Government Collection The MLA Bibliography is the premier index for research in literature and language. It is best suited to projects in advanced classes. NAP Science Books is an open access collection of e-books in the sciences made available by the National Academic Press. NetLibrary is a collection of over 50,000 recently published e-books. It offers books on every subject taught at Ferrum, and is available 24/7. New York Times is an index of articles from 1851 to the present. Consult a librarian for access to the full text of the articles. Recent issues of the Times are available in the FACTIVA News Pages. Newsbank Newspapers includes searchable full text of hundreds of papers from around the U. S. and the world. North American Women’s Letters and Diaries includes the writing of 1,325 women and 150,000 pages of diaries and letters dating from 1675 to 2002 Particular care has been taken to index this material so that it can be searched more thoroughly than ever before. OCLC’s First Search contains several research tools, including WorldCat. This massive union catalog allows users to search through over 50 million books. When our collection does not have a book you need, try First Search to identify a title for interlibrary loan. Most of these loans are free to our students and faculty. OED: According to The Times (of London) the Oxford English Dictionary is "the ultimate authority on the English language as well as a history of English speech and thought from its infancy to the present day". It is a unique source of scholarly information on the meaning, history and pronunciation of words both past and present. Oxford Journals is a collection of searchable full-text scholarly journals in a variety of fields published by Oxford University Press. Oxford Reference Shelf brings together language and subject reference works from one of the world's biggest reference publishers into a single cross-searchable resource. PMLA is the journal of the Modern Language Association. This link also leads to the MLA publication Profession. Polling the Nations includes the results of recent polls from around the world. It is an ideal source for documenting public opinion on almost any topic. Project Gutenberg has over 6260 full-text electronic books available for reading or downloading. It is a good source for classic literature. PsycARTICLES™ is a database of full-text articles from journals published by the American Psychological Association. It is the best place to begin psychology research assignments. This same link also leads to PsycBOOKS, a collection of full-text psychology books including both new works and classic texts. Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection PsycINFO is an abstract (not full-text) database of psychological literature from the 1800s to the present. An essential tool for researchers, PsycINFO combines a wealth of content with precise indexing so you can get just what you need easily. PubMed Central (PMC) is the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) free digital archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature. Religion and Philosophy Collection Remedial and Special Education archives the journal with full text available back to 2004. Richmond Daily Dispatch has the complete text of the newspaper from 1860 through 1865. This resource is provided by the library at the University of Richmond. Richmond Times-Dispatch is the current version of the Richmond paper. Coverage goes back to 1985. Roanoke Times links to the full text of our local daily paper from 1990 to the present. Salud en Espanol (CHC Spanish Version) The Southern Journal of Applied Forestry is a journal that covers forestry issues in an area from Virginia and Kentucky to as far west as Oklahoma and East Texas. The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy is a dynamic, open access reference work written and edited by leading scholars from around the world. It is constantly updated and checked for accuracy. Statesman’s Yearbook is the source for extensive data on every country in the world. This electronic version contains the full text of the current edition of The Statesman's Yearbook, regularly updated to reflect recent world events, with extensive search and browse facilities. Survey Documentation and Analysis is a set of programs for the documentation and Web-based analysis of survey data. There are also procedures for creating customized subsets of datasets. This set of programs is developed and maintained by the Computer-assisted Survey Methods Program (CSM) at the University of California, Berkeley. CSM also develops the CASES software package. UMW Archives (Virginia Conference) is an index of the holdings of the archives of Virginia’s United Methodist Women. These archives are available by invitation only. The Virginian-Pilot is the daily newspaper of Virginia’s Tidewater region. The Washington Post is the national capital’s most popular daily. Women Working: 1870-1930 focuses on women's role in the United States economy and provides access to digitized historical, manuscript, and image resources selected from Harvard University's library and museum collections.
